Come and shop at The Burrow this weekend to help in our crusade to support local businesses. Shopping here in Exbourne means more of your money stays close to home: supporting the local amenities, local suppliers and local jobs. Each £1 spent locally keeps your money circulating closer to home: for each £1 spent locally, 45 pence is reinvested locally. For each £1 spent in a corporate chain, 15 pence is reinvested locally. If you increase your local shopping from 50% to 80%, the multiplier effect means this will double the pounds that are reinvested locally.

The Burrow at Exbourne now stocks all those little extras you need for a super Christmas. Everything from wrapping paper and Christmas cards to Chestnuts and Glühwein. To get you in the festive spirit we have a great selection of fine wines and lots of seasonal sweets and biscuits such as the unusual Chilli & Lime Chocolate Snowballs.

The Burrow has some visitors from Cornwall

Recently Margie Lundie & Annette Egerton DBE travelled up from Grampound near Truro to visit The Burrow and talk to some of the people running it. They were able to meet Sally Horden and some of the volunteers working in the shop and pick their brains on everything from stock control to raising finance.
Grampound lost its shop and Post Office in June this year and have an enthusiastic team working hard to set up their own community shop. We wish the good luck with their project.

PUMPKIN PARTY at The Burrow...

During half term The Burrow at Exbourne held a Pumpkin Carving Party this proved a great success. The Hallowe’en themed event started with a fun and gooey session scooping and sculpting, then we sat around in the pumpkin-light to listen to a spooky story. The evening ended with a supper of bangers and mash and a bag of trick or treat sweets to take home.

We're planning some family activities for Christmas – come in and tell us your ideas.

The Burrow Book Club - 17th and 23rd October

What we thought:
Unanimous agreement that this book is a wonderful read. We gave it one of the highest scores amongst our club reads to date. Very funny, clever and a great escape to the country - even deeper and darker than here in West Devon!

The next meetings of the Burrow Book Club are Wednesday 23rd October at 8.00 pm and Thursday, 17th October at 2.30 pm. We are reading Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons.

This book was winner of the 1933 Femina Vie Heureuse Price, and is a wickedly funny portrait of British rural life in the 1930s. Flora Poste, a recently orphaned socialite, moves in with her country relatives, the gloomy Starkadders of Cold Comfort Farm, and becomes enmeshed in a web of violent emotions, despair and scheming, until Flora manages to set things right.

New members are always welcome to join our friendly group. Evening session £2 includes a glass of wine.

Children's Pumpkin Carving followed by Spooky Candlelit Supper

Come down to The Burrow and carve your name in a Pumpkin for Halloween and then, if your nerves can take it, join us for a Spooky Candlelit dinner!

Join us carving pumpkins between 4pm and 6pm on Wednesday 30th October. The cost is £5 per participant (supervising adults are free). We supply the pumpkin! What will you carve? Your name? A Halloween face? A castle?

All under 8s must be accompanied by an adult. Please come in costume if the fancy takes you!

Then Optional Spooky Candlelit supper of Bangers and Mash at 6.30 pm. Tickets £5

All are welcome to supper too. Come in your spookiest costume if you fancy. Be prepared to eat well, be frightened and laugh!

Book Club voting echoes Strictly Come Dancing

This is how the marks went for our current month's chosen book, Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel.
Mind you, this is only half the story....

The evening group raved about the book and gave top marks to it for being a gripping read and historically fascinating.

The afternoon group were split with half the group finding it very confusing and frustrating, especially when read on a Kindle which is not good for quick revision of the plot. Two members really enjoyed it but the average score from them averaged 4.25.
The evening group, bolstered by a glass of wine gave a unanimous 10/10. The conversation then moved on to Facebooking, Twitter and Saga holidays!

So mixed opinions and wide-ranging conversation. Come and join us next month?

In December 2001 the village shop and post office in Exbourne with Jacobstowe in rural West Devon closed. This meant that villagers would have to make a journey of at least 5 miles each way to reach the nearest town for shops and services. Now after 10 years of hard work and fund raising the village has its own shop and cafe and its underground.
